Former Engadget editor Joshua T. is hearing that Apple’s upcoming iphone 5 will have a new tear drop design with a 3.7 inch screen. Joshua also notes that the home button is bigger and is to be used as a gesture area also?..According to Joshua:

Our sources say the new model (or at least one of the new designs in testing) looks “more like the iPod touch than the iPhone 4.” The phone will be thinner than the iPhone 4, and may have a “teardrop” shape which goes from thick to thin (something along the lines of the MacBook Air profile).

Our source says the company is doing very “interesting things” with bonded glass technology, and has been exploring designs where the earpiece and sensors are somehow behind the screen itself, making for a device where the display is actually edge-to-edge.

Our sources can’t confirm whether or not Apple’s working on its own version of cable-free juicing. There’s also a “swipe area” shown in the drawing which appears to be on the bottom and / or top of the device — that could very well be an NFC point, but that’s pure speculation on our part.

Apple has released an update for iTunes pushing the version to 10.2.2. There is nothing important for the update but with a number of bug fixes. According to the release note from Apple, iTunes 10.2.2 comes with the following bug fixes:

Addresses an issue where iTunes may become unresponsive when syncing an iPad.
Resolves an issue which may cause syncing photos with iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to take longer than necessary.
Fixes a problem where video previews on the iTunes store
may skip while playing.
Addresses other issues that improve stability and performance.

Finally, Dev-Team had released the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 on all iOS devices from iPhone to iPad(except iPad 2) their next objective was to update Ultrasn0w to work on iOS 4.3.1. iPhone 4 users must take extra care while updating to iOS 4.3.1 as they need to prevent the baseband from upgrading. This update only brings iOS 4.3.1 support to basebands which could be unlocked earlier. Therefore, only baseband 01.59.00 can be unlocked on iPhone 4.

Step 1: Use PwnageTool or Redsn0w to jailbreak your iPhone.
Note: For iPhone 4 users, must use PwnageTool since Redsn0w does not create custom IPSW which is required to prevent baseband upgrade.

Step 2: Launch Cydia on iPhone and add “http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com” as the new repository URL. You can simply tap “Manage” -> “Sources” -> “Edit” -> “Add” to add the repository URL. If your not clear about this, checkout my post here on how to add sources to Cydia. This step only for beginner users, for those who already know about adding repo you may ignore this step.

Step 3: Then tap “Search” and search for “ultrasn0w” application

Step 4 : Install “ultrasn0w” and then on confirm. If you have already installed Ultrasn0w before, you will see a modify button instead of Install, like in the screen shot above.

Step 5: After, Cydia has installed Ultrasn0w, you should reboot your iPhone. To restart, press and hold the power button till you see the slide to power off screen. Now slide the button to turn your iPhone off and then turn it back on. You should now have an unlocked iPhone with iOS 4.3.1.

According to the new Commsec “iPad index”, Australia come in as the fifth best place to buy the Apple tablet. The index, which surveyed the price of the 16GB WiFi iPad 2 in 28 countries that sells the device, found Australia came in fifth behind the US, Canada, Mexico and Switzerland. They pay the equivalent of $US599.32, compared to $US499 in the States, although that doesn’t include sales tax (not all states in the US charge sales tax though).

Worse off than them are countries like Hungary and Denmark, who pay over $US700 for the entry level iPad. Of course, it’s relatively easy for iPad shoppers in Hungary to hop in the car and drive into another country to save a large chunk of cash on their purchase, a luxury they don’t necessarily have buying the device online and shipping it to Australia. Guide To Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone 4, 3GS and iPad1 using Redsn0w (Windows/Mac)

The Dev-Team has also updated PwnageTool for Mac to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 but Redsn0w is not only available to both Windows and Mac users but also offers a faster jailbreak process since it does not require any custom IPSW to be created.

Note: Please read through the below notes before taking action to jailbreak your iPhone

2. Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable. Now press Alt key on your Mac’s keyboard and click on Check for update. Windows users need to press the Shift key and then click on update. Since, RedSn0w does not create any custom IPSW you need to update your iPhone to iOS 4.3.1 before performing the jailbreak.

3. You can now select the IPSW file downloaded in the previous step to update your iPhone. In less than ten minutes, your iPhone will update and reboot.

4. Extract the RedSn0w zip archive we downloaded earlier and launch redsn0w.

5. Now click on Browse and select the IPSW file corresponding to your iPhone or other iOS device that you are jailbreaking.

6. RedSn0w will now try to identify and process the firmware file automatically. Once the firmware file has been identified click on Next. RedSn0w will now start preparing jailbreak data based on the IPSW file.

7. By default the checkbox beside Install Cydia should be selected. You do not need to change any settings here. Click Next to proceed.

8. You need to turn off your iPhone or iPod Touch after connecting it to the computer. Click on Next again. The next screen will show you instructions to put the iOS device into DFU mode.

9. You need to hold and release the iPhone buttons in the said order to place it in DFU mode in order to proceed with the iPhone jailbreak. This is the last step for the user as after this RedSn0w will do everything automatically.

10. The iPhone will be jailbroken and then rebooted.

11. Click on Finish when you see Done! on your screen.

12. Now jailbreaking process has complete with iPhone 4.3.1 iOS. Finally, sync back your iPhone to restore your backups data with iTunes.

The mobile Safari does a great job and makes web surfing fun and easy. That said, you may want other browsing options. Just do a simple search for “browser” in App Store, you’ll find ample of safari-alternatives available for download. You may already use one of the alternative browsers on your iPhone to browse the web. You love the browser and really want to stick with it. However, when someone sends you an email with a link in it, you can’t use your favorite browser to open the URL. When you tap on the link, it’s still Safari that loads the web page for you.

So, how can you change the default web browser to your favorite on iPhone? As of now, Apple does not allow you to do so. It only allows you to change the default search engine but there is no way to alter the default browser. With a jailbroken iPhone, however, you can utilize a hack called Browser Changer to set your favorite browser as the default.

Simply launch Cydia and search for Browser Changer. The hack is completely free and you can just tap the “Install” button to install it. Once installed, you can go to Settings > BrowserChanger to configure it.

The Browser Changer is enabled by default. Just tap on Selected Browser to select the browser you want to set as the default one. The hack supports 15 different browsers in total such as 360 web browser, Atomic, iCab Mobile, Mercury Pro, Opera Mini, Skyfire, etc.

Apple today announced that it will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 6 through June 10 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. According to the press release, this year the conference will focus on the future of iOS and Mac OS.

“At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”

If you’re a mobile or Mac OS developer, here are the activities at WWDC 2011:

more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers on a wide range of technology-specific topics for developing, deploying and integrating the latest iOS and Mac OS technologies;

As a rumors been around for a couple of months, iOS 5 is likely to be postponed till this fall and it’s said to be previewed at WWDC. Apple would revamp its MobileMe service as a cloud-based service for remote file and music storage. The upcoming iOS 5 is said to focus more on the cloud services. A number of new services may launch with this new version including a “music locker” service which could store your music remotely and a location service that lets you find friends and family members.

According to Techcrunch:

iOS 5 will launch in the fall and will be a major revamp of the OS.
It could well be previewed at WWDC, it just won’t be released then.
The iOS 5 launch is also likely to coincide with the release of a new type of iPad which we previously reported on.
The new iOS will be heavily built around the cloud, and we could see several new services launch from Apple that take advantage of this.
Yes, one of those is very likely a “music locker” service. There is also a fall launch aim for this, during Apple’s annual music-themed event.
But much of the cloud stuff will first be talked about at WWDC, Apple’s developer event which will take place in June.
One of the new cloud service elements is likely a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members.

So what about iPhone 5? If the Techcrunch’s source is right, it’s very likely the iPhone 5 will not come with iOS 5. Instead, an iOS 4.x version specifically designed for the new iPhone.

How To Setting Personal Hotspot On iPhone 4 (iOS 4.3)

This guide will show you how to activate personal hotspot on your iPhone and share it with your wireless devices. To use personal Hotspot for the first time:

1. Go to Settings > General > Network > Personal Hotspot. This option will be available only if your network provider allows Internet tethering. If it worked before on previous versions of iOS, hotspot will work just fine.

2. Turn on Personal Hotspot by tapping once on the On/Off button. You will be prompted to enter a wi-fi password.

3. After entering the password hit Done. Next you will be asked how do you want to share the internet access. If the Wi-fi or Bluetooth radio are Off they will be turned on automatically.

4. Go ahead and choose Wi-fi and USB only. Your iPhone is now broadcasting a wi-fi network with the password you selected and the name of the network is same as that of your iPhone.

5. Now go to any wireless device like your iPod Touch or laptop and look for networks. My Mac was pretty quick to discover it.

6. The broadcast strength seemed strong enough. No matter where the iPhone was left in the room, the signal showed up pretty strong. Once connected, the iPhone will display a blue status bar(just like earlier with Internet Tethering) showing how many devices are connected.

7. If you keenly observe the hotspot service while using it, you will notice that it automatically shuts itself off after an hour approximately if not used. We do realize that wi-fi hotspots are power hungry and don’t go easy on our batteries. In order to make the hotspot active again just visit the Personal Hotspot pane which is now on the first page of your Settings app.

8. While the mobile hotspot is on over wi-fi, the iPhone can’t connect to other wi-fi networks. If you need to connect to other networks on the iPhone but leave the hotspot on go to Settings > Wi-fi and tap on Disconnect wi-fi clients.

In case you aren’t on a 3G network the hotspot will obviously stop when you make or receive a phone call. However, once the call is over everything resumes just like the call never took place.

During the iPad 2 event, Apple mentioned the iOS 4.3 will be available to all users on March 11. Our recommendation is to stay on iOS 4.2.1 a month after 4.3 is released as all its going to be is a headache.

BigBoss also pointed out the upcoming iOS update will come with an implementation of address space layout randomization (ASLR). Such implementation change will impact the way mobile substrate works. If you haven’t heard of mobile substrate, it is a code library that other tweaks depend on. So if mobile substrate doesn’t work with iOS 4.3, your favorite hacks like WinterBoard, BiteSMS, etc will not work either.

With 4.3 comes apple’s implementation of address space layout randomization (ASLR). In short, this will mess up the way mobile substrate works. You will need a new mobile substrate in order to use your favorite tweaks such as winterboard, sbsettings, bitesms, folder enhancer, etc. So you should definitely avoid 4.3 until an “official” jailbreak is released for it. Of course we will announce when that is right here.

Therefore, avoid upgrading to iOS 4.3 until a stable jailbreak solution is released.

Odd is before watching the video on the device, you normally need to transfer the video from computer to iPad/iPhone via iTunes. This is quite troublesome. Transfer iPhone Apps Between Computers Using iTunes (Home Sharing)

Let’s say you have purchased an iPhone app via iTunes on your desktop. How do you transfer it to your laptop? Since the release of iTunes 9 in September 2009, Apple introduced a new feature in iTunes called Home Sharing. It allows multiple computers (up to five) in the same local network to copy and share music, movies, apps and other media between computers.

It’s not a hidden feature. But even Apple has updated the iTunes to version 10, not every user have tried it. Here I’ll walk you through this fantastic feature and show you how you can transfer apps between computers easily. In the walkthrough guide, I’ll show you how to transfer the apps from desktop to your laptop so you keep the app library in both desktop and laptop in-sync.

NOTE: Before we start, make sure you have the following three things:

Both computers are installed with iTunes 9 or later .
You already have an Apple ID associated with an iTunes or App Store Account.
Both computers are connected to the same local network either via Ethernet or WiFi.

Enabling Home Sharing on Your Desktop

1. First, open iTunes on your desktop.

2. Click “Advance” and select “Turn On Home Sharing”.

3. Select the Home Sharing icon on the left-hand side of iTunes

4. You’ll be prompted to provide your iTunes account. Simply enter your iTunes or App Store account name and password.

5. Click “Create Home Share” to enable home sharing and then click “Done” to complete the registration.

Enable Home Sharing on Your Laptop

1. On your laptop, launch iTunes.

2. Go over the above 5 steps again to enable Home Sharing on your laptop. Make sure you use the same iTunes account to login Home Sharing.

3. For the first-time setup, you’ll be prompted with message “Home Sharing could not be activated because this computer is authorized for the account. Would you like to authorize now?“. Simply click “Yes” to confirm. iTunes will then show you a message telling you that the authorization is successful.

Transfer Apps from One Computer to Another

If you successfully complete the above procedures, you should now be able to access the desktop’s iTunes library from your laptop computer.

1. Just click the Home Share to connect to under Shared on the left-hand side of iTunes.

2. Select the “Apps” folder and pick the app you want to transfer. Say, let’s transfer the Cut the Rope app. Just click on it and drag it to your own library to transfer the app.

Obviously you’re not limited to transfer apps from other computers. You’re allowed to transfer other media such as music, movie, TV shows, etc.

Automatically Transfer Apps Between Computers

If you’re planning to purchase an iPad, hold off a bit and wait for a few more days. As reported by All Things D, Apple will host an event on March 2 to unveil the next generation of iPad, currently known as iPad 2.

The new iPad is expected to be thinner and lighter. It’ll possibly come with improved processing power, a better screen, more RAM and storage, as well as, front-facing camera for FaceTime video chat support. Some reports suggested the iPad 2 will even be powered by one of Qualcomm’s multimode chips and will run on both GSM and CDMA-based networks around the world. Tip To Use Multiple iTunes Libraries on a Single Computer

Apparently you do not want to share your own iTunes library with others. You want to keep your own library and create a new one for other users. There is a hidden feature that you may not know. iTunes does allow you to create separate library for individual user. Just hold down the Option key (for Mac User / Alt key (for Windows user) each time you launch iTunes. You’ll then be prompted with options to create a new iTunes library or choose an existing iTunes library.

Let’s say you’re now sharing the computer with your mum and dad. Simply select the “Create Library…” option and create a new library for your mum. Do the same procedures again to create the library for your dad as well.

Later when your dad needs to use iTunes, tell him to hold down the option key (for Mac) or Alt key (for Windows) when launching iTunes. Then select the “Choose Library…” option and select his own iTunes library folder.

By using this technique, each of you can keep music, movies or apps in a separate iTunes library. You can have a complete control of your own library. You can add/delete music or sync your iPhone without affecting other’s iTunes library. But please note that this method only works on iTunes 9.2 or up.

And trust me, accidental app purchases are fairly common especially with kids.

PressReader 2.2, upon receiving upgrades from its previous versions, makes reading the news an even easier experience. Navigating through the paper’s various sections is easy, as you scroll through from the front page to the Sports section. In truth, it’s even simpler to read compared to an actual newspaper. You can do away with turning the large pages, while you jump from one section to another.

Press Reader has several new features. Now it has a Library Shelf feature which appears like a newsstand. You have the option of picking from a wide variety of newspapers, giving you a clear picture of what’s happening all over the world. It automatically removes stored newspapers from the iPad’s database, to free up memory space. If you have a knack for storing old news, however, you can simply switch off the feature.

Press Reader 2.2 also features newspaper printing and quick messaging and news sharing on Facebook. Traditional folks who prefer the novelty of reading an actual newspaper can simply print all of the publications that they read regularly. Socially responsible folks, on the other hand, can alert their friends about certain reports via their social networking accounts.

Warner Bros is now experimenting by selling movies as standalone iOS apps, starting with Inception and The Dark Night. While the apps themselves are free to download, the actual movies available as in-app purchases.

Warner Bros. has played it smart by including bonus features, such as games, soundtracks, and integration with Twitter and Facebook to promote hit dialogues. The free versions are teasers which lure users to buy in full movie via an “in-app” purchase button. While “The Dark Knight” costs $9.99, Inception is priced higher at $11.99. Both the paid offerings include innovations such as the ability to watch the film in as many as 34 languages and the ability to clip sounds and customize ringtones. IMO, 10 bucks for a few ringtones and wallpapers surely sounds like an overkill.

Once you’ve paid for a movie, you can choose to either stream the movie to your iPad or download it to your iPad for later viewing. Both the apps are available in over 30 countries and provide an alternative to users in countries that do not have access to films for purchase via the iTunes Store. Warner Bros is already working on app editions for other movies to be launched throughout the year. Unfortunately, Apple’s DRM restrictions imply that users can’t transfer these movies to their Mac or DVD players, despite making a hefty in-app purchase.

Cydia blocking in China, Ireland And UK With An Error

Earlier today it was being reported that Cydia access had been blocked in a few countries. The 3 network over in the UK/Ireland and then China Unicom were reported as not being able to refresh data first mentioned by Steven Troughton Smith a known jailbreak app developer.

Those of you around those areas you can breath easy as it is only an error and the problem is being fixed. Good ol Aunt Tuaw has got the answer:

Auntie is happy to report that the Irish Cydia Blackout of 2010 was, in fact, a mistake. 3 Spokesperson Chris Jones told TUAW that Cydia was blocked in error.

Jones stated that 3 uses 3rd party company Bluecoat to filter their Internet connection for adult content and other objectionable material. “Cydia has been caught in this filter in error,” he told TUAW, “and we are working to resolve this.” The Irish Times tech team got the same explanation.

Auntie doesn’t have a specific time as to when 3 will resolve the issue, but is happy to report that 3 is working on the problem.

Its been known that Apple products are made with great quality and yet again here is another example. A reader over at tuaw recently emailed them an interesting story and video to go along with. We only recommend one thing, don’t drop your ipad outside long enough to be ran over.. Better yet don’t drop your ipad at all, we hope she recovers well although the medical bills may be rather high!

According to Tuaw:

An iPad belonging to a fellow employee handled being run over by the front and rear wheels of a Chrysler PT Cruiser. As the video shows, the iPad was in the standard Apple Case and the front glass was crushed quite extensively. However, the Home button still worked and the rest of the components in the display were totally functional. The touchscreen still responded to gestures, and the accelerometer responded by rotating the screen.

Facetime For iPad Leaked

Before you all get excited you can’t actually use facetime for ipad on your current 1st gen ipad but maybe one day you’ll be able to. A reader over at iPaDevice has found that the facetime app in iOS 4.3 beta 1 contains support for the ipad and he has figured out a way to get it running.

Although not fully functional we’re at least getting a glimpse of what Facetime will look like on the iPad 2. If facetime ever becomes functional on the 1st gen ipad we’ll be sure and let you know so stay tuned.
